A little suspense. One lucky landing.

When to use a classroom name picker wheel

  1. Cold calling without the dread

Students take a question more calmly when the wheel picks them, not you. Add a rule that anyone can phone a friend once per lesson, and the stakes drop even further.

  2. Choosing classroom jobs

Line leader, board cleaner, plant waterer. Spin at the start of each week and remove each name once it lands, so every student gets a job before anyone gets a second one.

  3. Presentation order

Spin repeatedly and write the order on the board. Nobody can argue they were set up to go first, and the waiting students pay attention because the next spin could be them.

  4. Review games

Pair the name wheel with a question deck. The spin picks who answers, and a correct answer earns a point for their table. A dull review session turns into a game show.

Get more from the wheel

  • Use first names or initials only when you project the wheel, and keep full rosters off shared screens.
  • Hit Remove after each spin when you want every student called once before anyone repeats.
  • Upload a CSV exported from your gradebook instead of typing 30 names. One name per row is enough.
  • Keep a separate wheel per class period. Bookmark each one so your 2nd period roster doesn't mix with 5th.

Questions people ask

Is the classroom wheel fair to every student?

Yes. Each name gets an equal slice and your browser picks the result with cryptographic randomness. If a student appears twice by accident, they get double odds, so scan the list for duplicates first.

Do student names get sent anywhere?

No. The wheel runs in your browser and your list stays on your device. Names only leave the device if you choose to create a public verifiable draw, which you don't need for class.

How many students can I put on the wheel?

Up to 500 names, which covers a whole grade. Past 100 entries the slice labels hide to stay readable and the chosen name shows below the wheel instead.
