How to pick a giveaway winner on Google Forms

Google Forms is the easiest way to collect giveaway entries you can actually export. Every response lands in a table, so the hard part isn't collecting, it's removing duplicates and test entries before you draw.

Doo draws with public randomness that doesn't exist until after your list is locked in. Anyone can check the result.

Get your Google Forms entries

  1. Close the form at the deadline

In the Responses tab, switch off "Accepting responses" and add a closed message. Late entries can't sneak in after that.

  2. Download the responses as a CSV

In the Responses tab, click the three-dot menu and choose "Download responses (.csv)". You can also click "Link to Sheets" to work in a spreadsheet first.

  3. Remove duplicates by email

In Google Sheets, select the data and use Data, then Data cleanup, then Remove duplicates, checking only the email column. Each person ends up with one row.

  4. Delete your test responses

You probably filled the form in a few times while setting it up. Delete those rows, plus anyone who didn't meet the rules (wrong country, under 18).

Pick and check the winner

  1. Upload the CSV to the Winner Picker

Upload the cleaned file or paste the name column. Use names or the first part of email addresses, since full emails on a public results page aren't kind to entrants.

  2. Draw your winners

Need five winners for five gift cards? Set the number to 5 and draw once. Each person can win only once per draw.

  3. Email the winner, then share the link

Reply to the email address on their row with the good news, then post the results link wherever you promoted the form.

Mistakes that make a draw look rigged

  • Forgetting to turn off "Accepting responses", so entries keep arriving after the draw.
  • Turning on "Limit to 1 response" without realizing it forces entrants to sign in to Google, which cuts entries.
  • Publishing full email addresses on a public results page.
  • Leaving your own test responses in the list.
  • Asking for a phone number or address on the entry form when you only need it from the winner.

Announce the winner

Post it where people entered, and link the results page so anyone can check the draw.

Questions people ask

Can Google Forms pick a random winner by itself?

No. Forms collects and exports responses but has no random draw. Export the CSV and use a picker, or a spreadsheet formula if you don't need a public, checkable result.

How do I stop people entering a Google Form twice?

Turn on "Limit to 1 response", which requires a Google sign-in, or collect emails and remove duplicates in Sheets before the draw.

What should my giveaway form ask for?

Keep it short: name, email, and a box confirming they're 18 or older and agree to the rules. Ask the winner for a shipping address later, not everyone.
