How to pick a giveaway winner on Excel
If your entries already sit in Excel or Google Sheets, you're one step from a winner. You can sort by RAND() in a cell, but nobody else can check that result, and the numbers change every time the sheet recalculates.
Draw your Excel winner
Who's in?
0 entries
Doo draws with public randomness that doesn't exist until after your list is locked in. Anyone can check the result.
Get your Excel entries
Put one entrant per row
Column A gets the names. A header like Name, Username or Email is fine in a CSV upload: the Winner Picker reads that column and skips the header row.
Remove duplicates
In Excel, use Data, then Remove Duplicates. In Google Sheets, it's Data, then Data cleanup, then Remove duplicates. Do this unless your rules gave extra entries.
Handle extra entries on purpose
If someone earned 3 entries (say, one per friend referred), give them 3 rows. Write that rule down before you start.
Save as CSV or copy the column
Use File, then Save As, then CSV in Excel, or File, then Download, then CSV in Google Sheets. Copying the name column works too.
Pick and check the winner
Skip the RAND() formula
RAND() and RANDBETWEEN() recalculate on every edit, so you can't show what the result was or prove you didn't refresh until you liked it.
Upload the list and draw
Upload the CSV or paste the column into the Winner Picker. Draw one winner, several, or 1st through 3rd place in one pass.
Share the results page
The page shows the full list and the draw, so a skeptical entrant, boss or client can check it in seconds.
Mistakes that make a draw look rigged
- Recalculating a RAND() column until a name you like ends up on top.
- Sorting the sheet by a random column and forgetting the formula changes the moment you edit anything.
- Pasting the column with its header still attached, which can turn "Name" into a winner.
- Merging two tabs and getting duplicate rows you didn't mean to give out.
Announce the winner
Post it where people entered, and link the results page so anyone can check the draw.

Questions people ask
How do I pick a random name in Excel?
You can add =RAND() next to each name and sort by that column, but it changes on every recalculation and leaves no record. Uploading the list to a picker gives you a fixed result and a page to share.
Can I give some people more entries than others?
Yes. Add a row for each entry. Three rows for one person means three chances, as long as your rules said so up front.
Does it work with Google Sheets and Numbers?
Yes. Any spreadsheet that saves a CSV or lets you copy a column works with the Winner Picker.
