Your giveaway

Ready to post

Before you post

  • Your caption says Instagram doesn't sponsor, endorse or run the giveaway, and that entrants release Instagram (your official rules carry the release).
  • The end date includes a time and a time zone, like Sunday at 8pm ET, so nobody argues about a 9pm comment.
  • Entry steps fit in three lines and match exactly what you'll check when you draw.
  • You only ask people to tag friends in comments, never to tag themselves in photos they aren't in.
  • Eligibility (age and country) is in the caption, not just in the rules.
  • The link in bio points at your rules before the post goes live.

Make it work harder

  1. Put the prize in the first line

Instagram cuts captions after about 125 characters with a 'more' link. If the prize isn't above the fold, half your audience never sees it.

  2. Ask a question, not just a tag

'Tag a friend' gets you names. 'Tell us your go-to order' gets you names plus a comment section full of product talk, which is free research.

  3. Pin your rules comment

Pin a comment with the end time and 'one winner, picked at random'. It answers the same three DMs before they arrive.

  4. Export comments before you draw

Paste the comments or a CSV into the Instagram comment picker, set the tag requirement and exclude your own team. You get a results link to post in stories.

Questions people ask

Do I need to mention Instagram in my giveaway caption?

Instagram's promotion guidelines ask you to acknowledge that the promotion isn't sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Instagram, and to have entrants release Instagram. Most brands put the acknowledgment in the caption and the release in the official rules.

Can I ask people to share to their story to enter?

Many brands offer a story share as a bonus entry. You can't see private stories, so keep it as an extra, never the only way to enter, and say how you'll count it.

How long should an Instagram giveaway run?

Three to seven days is the sweet spot. Shorter misses people who check Instagram on weekends; longer and the post sinks before it ends.
